2023 was a year of dusting myself off; of returning to form; of slowly becoming myself again.
2023 was a year of musicality, as I (literally) dusted off the ukulele that I intended to master during our first lockdown and enrolled in 9 weeks of ukulele school 🎶.
2023 was a year of dance, as I spent a total of 10 months in dance classes learning choreography that I performed on stage in four dance numbers, ranging from hip hop, street, cabaret, and groove dance styles 👯♀️.
2023 was the year I learned to drive a houseboat and earned pirate ship captain status for Canada Day weekend 🏴☠️.
2023 was the year I left the least creatively-fulfilling job I’ve ever had and traded up to one that I adore ♥️.
2023 was the year I completed an instructional design certificate and opened my eyes to an entirely different aspect of instructional content outside of technical writing 🎓.
2023 was a year filled with amazing live music. John Mayer, Lewis Capaldi, Dermot Kennedy, Matchbox Twenty, Dani Camacho, Savannah Read, Generous Thieves, Fake Shark, Said The Whale (twice), Taylor Swift, Third Eye Blind, Weezer, Bran Van 3000, Finger Eleven, Bahamas, Saint Motel, Aqua, Pat Benatar, Jason Derulo, Beyonce, Matthew Good, and Five Alarm Funk 🎶.
2023 was the year I spent in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Glacier, Seattle, and Sechelt ✈️🚙.
2023 was an outdoor adventurey kinda year, including snowshoeing on Cypress; kayaking in Deep Cove, and hiking Quarry Rock, The Chief, and Hidden Groves trails ⛰.
2023 was a nerdy year spent making friendship bracelets for Taylor Swift boat cruises; dressing up for Fan Expo, the Buffy musical, and theme parties; crushing pub trivia and music bingo; embarrassing ourselves at karaoke (but only in other countries where it doesn’t count); and embarrassing ourselves filming TikTok dances (but never posting them so it doesn’t count) 🥳.
What did I ever do to deserve a life where I get to do all my favourite things with all my favourite people all the time?
2023 was a year of resetting my baseline after a very weird last few years. And now, I feel like I’m me again. Let’s see who ’24 turns us into.
