Not thinking about tomorrow

We were a few songs deep into the setlist when “Black Balloon” started to play at the small stadium in my hometown tonight.

I looked up from the nosebleeds and was startled by the fact that I was suddenly surrounded by balloons from all sides.

And that’s when this feeling hit me.

The world has felt like a tough place as of late. Lately if it’s not a pandemic, it’s wars, or caricatures in power, or gut-wrenching loss in a chaos-ridden world, or never-ending news headlines that read like fiction.

But the world is still a place where people sneak black balloons into a Goo Goo Dolls concert and covertly inflate them just so strangers can bop them around like little kids during a 4-minute 90s rock song. And that’s a really nice thing to know.
